Anime Convention Guide – The Main Events

With anime conventions coming up, I decided to write a few blogs on different topics about going to a convention. I’ve been going to different anime conventions since 2007 and I think I’ve had enough experience to write a few guides on it.

In the previous Anime Convention Guide post, I talked about some optional things you could bring with you at a convention. In this post, I will go over some of the main events many anime conventions have to offer.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony is the first main event of the anime convention. The event usually the official start of the convention, has an emcee and introduce the Guest of Honors to the convention.

Anime Music Video Contest

The event showcases many AMVs by category  submitted months in advance by editors. Aside from just showcasing the AMVs, the audience will be given a chance to vote on their favorites.

Conventions usually hold a concert. Larger conventions will invite Japanese bands or artists known to have done an opening or ending of an anime series. Sometimes the artist/band will just be a very well known one.

Masquerade is a showcase of cosplayers. Cosplayers are there to show off intricate cosplays or perform skits as anime characters. They are judged by professionals in different categories.

Closing Ceremony

The closing ceremony marks the end of the convention. The organizers usually make announcements for the next year.

So those are just some quick overview as to what the main events are. Usually they are free to attend and are first come first serve. Larger anime conventions like Anime Expo have them as paid events. Next time we will cover a few tips of mine when tackling the Exhibit Hall.
